In a statement released Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. had been taken into custody by U.S. immigration officials and was being prepared for an expedited departure from the nation.
The DHS claimed that Chavez, a Mexican national, was the subject of an active arrest warrant in Mexico due to his alleged involvement in organized crime and the trafficking of explosives, guns, and ammunition.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of DHS, stated: “Under President Trump, no one is above the law – including world-famous athletes,”
Julio Cesar Chavez, a former three-division world champion, is the father of Chavez Jr., 39. At the age of 17, he started boxing professionally in 2003 in his hometown of Culiacan, Sinaloa.
After a 15-month reign, Chavez Jr. lost the WBC middleweight title to Argentine Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez in 2012, having gained it against German fighter Sebastian Zbik in 2011.

Numerous bans and disputes have clouded his career. He was suspended for seven months and fined $10,000 in 2009 after testing positive for furosemide, a diuretic intended to diminish muscle mass and get rid of illegal substances.
He was suspended for nine months and fined $900,000 by the Nevada Athletic Commission in 2013 for failing a drug test following his defeat by Sergio Martinez.
In the year 2017, he lost against Mexican boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in one of his most well-known struggles. As of right now, his record stands at 34 knockouts, 54 victories, 6 defeats, and 1 draw. He most recently lost on Saturday to Jake Paul.
