Fans of the Dallas Mavericks may still be in shock over Luka Doncic’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. On the plus side, though, is getting Cooper Flagg.
The Mavericks will be hoping that Flagg can replicate his Duke success in the upcoming season. And every one of their supporters will be keeping an eye on his performance in the league. Legendary Mavericks coach Dirk Nowitzki will join them, and he thinks the club will be strong enough to contend for a championship once Kyrie Irving recovers from his injury.
On the DLSS Sports YouTube channel, Nowitzki stated: “If you look at the front court, it’s loaded with talented players. The backcourt, they have two to three players in every position, especially when Kyrie comes back,”
Now, Flagg isn’t being expected to immediately become as good as Doncic and perform at an MVP level. After all, this is his first year eating at the table with the big boys. However, Flagg is anticipated to become the franchise’s face as he continues to hone his already exceptional skill set.
Dirk Nowitzki Talks About His Mentoring Style with Luka Doncic and Shares His First Text to Cooper Flagg
Nowitzki, who won a title with the Mavs, will undoubtedly give Flagg some advise when they play each other in Dallas for the 7th annual Dirk Nowitzki Foundation Tennis Classic. Nowitzki said he has been in contact with Flagg for a while and is thrilled that he will be attending the event.
“They had reached out to Flagg to see if he was in town and could come out and support his initiative,” the former Mavs player stated. He said: “I have never met him. I have been in touch a little bit after he got drafted and reached out to him, obviously. Wanted to congratulate him and welcome him,”
Nowitzki discussed his initial text message to Flagg, saying: “‘Hey, welcome. Obviously, congrats on being the first pick and welcome to Dallas. If there’s anything you ever need, I don’t know, advice, dinner, or basketball or whatever, I am just a phone call away.’ So that’s how I left it, and that’s how I always was with Luca.”
According to Nowitzki, if someone is ready, they are, and if they are not, that’s also acceptable because time will probably take care of it.
