The Suspension of Angel Reese: Sophie Cunningham’s Perspective

For those who haven’t heard, Sky forward Angel Reese has caused a stir with some unfortunate remarks in a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune. In the article, which was released on September 3, Reese expressed her displeasure with the current situation of her underperforming team and stated that she would not be “settling for the same s— we did this year” in the future.

In the end, Reese apologized to her teammates for what they saw to be direct attacks and was suspended for half a game as a result of the entire incident.

Sophie Cunningham Weighs in on Angel Reese Suspension

Sophie Cunningham, the guard for the Fever, showed some empathy for Reese’s troubles on a losing team in a Tuesday podcast episode, but she also made it clear that such remarks are simply inappropriate to make aloud, much less to the media.

Cunningham stated: “I get it. When you’re losing and it’s been a frustrating season, everyone is feeling those emotions. And when I say everyone, it’s not just her,”. ‘I’m sure her teammates feel it, her coaches feel it, the organization feels it, the fans. Literally everyone feels that.

“And there’s just some things that—and this is coming from me—there’s just some things that you can’t say. I think one of my biggest things is I’m a very team-first person. I will always put the team before my feelings. And I think that should be a standard. You gotta protect your locker room. You just can’t be saying everything you’re feeling because that’s just not a good look. … Protect your locker room at all costs. I’m sure she regrets saying that, don’t get me wrong, but man, there’s just some things that everyone probably knows but you just can’t say.”

Cunningham did a good job summarizing that. Losing will irritate you if you’re a competitive person. That being said, you still need to be careful what you say to avoid creating a problem in the locker room, which would further hinder your success.
