After his second season was cut short owing to the discovery of deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder in February, Victor Wembanyama is back on the court. He looked better than ever Wednesday against the Mavericks in the opening game of his third NBA season.
The 2023 NBA draft’s top pick and French sensation hasn’t dazzled onlookers in a long time. Like the incredible highlights he can put together on any given night, his guard-like movements and control at 7’4″ have never been seen before.
In the Spurs’ 125-92 victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday, Wembanyama recorded the most points in a season opener in the history of the Spurs with 40 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks.
In his brief career, which included a 50-point performance against the Wizards last season, it was his fifth game with 40 points or more. The sheer quantity of highlight plays Wembanyama had during San Antonio’s season opening was even more impressive than the figures, with several of them leaving spectators wondering what had happened.
Wembanyama’s incredible performance to start the season included the following highlights:

The rest of the league finds it frightening that Wembanyama is only becoming better.
