Well, it finally happened. During the 49ers-Rams game, legendary sportscaster Al Michaels gave a performance that had fans wondering if their TV remotes had a translate to English button. X was lit up with confusion, concern, and sarcasm.
To be fair, Al is an icon. He’s been on Super Bowl broadcasts and all but on this particular 49ers-Rams, it was bad and now, fans want him to retire.
Michaels was caught out making multiple mistakes as he fronted Amazon Prime’s broadcast of the NFC West game.
Visiting 49ers remain without star quarterback Brock Purdy, 25, as they picked up a late win.
He has been in sports broadcasting since the 1960s, but many fans believe it is time for the veteran to retire.
The broadcaster appeared confused throughout the game as he continues as the face of Thursday Night Football.
Perhaps his worst mistake was the mispronunciation of Rams wide receiver Jordan Whittington, 25.
Whittington made 33 yards from two receptions last night.
However, Michaels continued to mistake his last name as “Whittingham”.
This led fans to vent their frustrations on social media.
“Al Michaels tripling down calling Whittington ‘Whittingham’. Not one soul correcting him,” one fan shared.
He struggled to keep up with play as an incident during the first quarter showcased.
The 49ers had 15 yards added to one play after the Rams were flagged for roughing the passer.
But Michaels wrongfully assumed that the call would go against the visitors.
“Half the time the dude’s just stone silent when massive chaotic plays are unfolding and I swear it’s cos he can’t see what’s going on,” another fan posted.
Look, we love Al but maybe it’s time he calls it over, retired and go babysit his grandkids.
