After rejecting two financial settlement proposals from the university, former LSU football coach Brian Kelly‘s lawyers have given LSU authorities until Monday to formally declare that they will pay him the $54 million he is due under the terms of his contract.
Kelly was in the fourth season of a $95 million, ten-year contract when she was dismissed on October 26.
On the day of Kelly’s dismissal, former LSU athletic director Scott Woodward promised him a $25 million lump sum payment, according to records the Baton Rouge Advocate was able to get. Additionally, Woodward offered to take away Kelly’s contract’s mitigation clause, which would have lowered the buyout sum had he returned to coaching.
According to the records, Julie Cromer, senior deputy athletic director at LSU, subsequently raised the settlement offer to $30 million in two payments. Just prior to the 2021 season, Fisher received a four-year extension from Ross Bjork, Woodward’s successor at Texas A&M in 2019, making his ten-year contract worth more than $90 million. When Fisher was hired away from Florida State, Woodward initially offered him a 10-year, $75 million contract.
According to the article, Kelly, who had a 34-14 record at LSU, turned down both offers.
