Ex-NBA Sebastian Telfair Opens Up About Why He’s Moved Back To The Projects

Sebastian Telfair has moved back to the Projects despite making millions in the NBA.

Sebastian Telfair, the former basketball prodigy who once lived in penthouses, is back in the headlines. But this time, it’s not about a comeback on the court. It’s about where he’s chosen to call home: the Projects. Yes, the same projects he grew up in, even after making millions in the NBA.

Most people dream of leaving the hood once they make it big. Fancy houses, gated communities, maybe a mansion with a pool shaped like a dollar sign. But not Telfair. The man is back to the Projects due to poor financial management.

“The day I picked up a basketball was the day I was for sure knowing I was going to make it out,” Telfair said in the episode. “After being the No. 1 player in New York City history, I turned that dream into a reality. I played over 10 years in the NBA and made tens of millions of dollars. I had everything I ever dreamed of.”

“But after a series of legal issues and personal problems, my life has become something I could never imagine,” Telfair continued. “I’m right back to where it all began. Back in Coney Island, back in the projects, back in the fire.”

Well, it’s all about how his $19 million raked from the NBA was managed.

“[I] end up getting locked up in 2017, unlicensed firearms and all that BS,” Telfair revealed, referencing a 2017 arrest for gun possession, which ended in a three and a half year prison sentence. That conviction was overturned on appeal in 2023.

“Fighting the feds and my divorce affected my finances,” he continued. “Now I got to run around broke.”

It takes guts to return to the same streets where you learned to dribble, especially after tasting the bright lights of the NBA. Most folks would rather pretend they never came from there, Telfair, on the other hand, is embracing it like a badge of honor.

Maybe it’s not about how high you rise, but how real you stay. And Sebastian Telfair? He’s keeping it very real.
