During a Tuesday night matchup in Atlanta, the Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane was ejected after a dramatic sequence with the Atlanta Hawks. With 5:24 remaining in the third quarter and Orlando trailing by 14, Bane committed a hard foul on Hawks forward Onyeka Okongwu as he attempted a lay-up. While Okongwu was on the floor, Bane then spiked the ball into the forward’s head while standing over him.

Officials reviewed the sequence and quickly handed Bane a flagrant 1 for the foul and a technical for the spike, resulting in an automatic ejection.
At the time of his ejection, Bane had 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 22 minutes. The Hawks took advantage of the meltdown, cruising to a 127-112 win as fans replayed the bizarre “volleyball spike” moment all over social media.
After the game, Bane said the ball hit Okongwu unintentionally, but the league will likely review the incident.
The Magic will regroup and face the Boston Celtics next.
