Kafka, 38, brings experience from multiple roles across the NFL. He previously served as the Giants’ offensive coordinator and stepped in as interim head coach after New York fired Brian Daboll during the 2025 season.
Detroit targeted Kafka for his offensive background and player development skills. The Lions considered him for their offensive coordinator position earlier in the offseason before filling that role separately. The team eventually selected Drew Petzing, but leaders still wanted Kafka’s presence.
Kafka still chose Detroit for his next step. He accepted a high-level offensive position within Dan Campbell’s coaching structure.
Before his time in New York, Kafka worked under Andy Reid in Kansas City. He helped develop quarterbacks and contributed to innovative offensive systems. Kafka also played quarterback in the NFL before moving into coaching. That background shapes his approach to game planning and player communication.
The Lions continue building after recent playoff success. Management wants sustained improvement rather than short-term gains. Kafka’s arrival signals aggressive planning for the upcoming season. Detroit now aims to push deeper into postseason contention.
