Venus Williams Will Compete in Her First Australian Open Since 2021

Venus Williams, who is 45 years old and just married, has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

Despite her infrequent participation on the court, the tennis star will continue to participate this month at the Australian Open after being selected as a wild-card participant. Williams will attend the major tournament for the first time since 2021 with this bid. Since 2023, she has also not participated in any international competitions. She recently married model, producer, and actor Andrea Preti, therefore it will also be her first tournament as a married lady.

Williams’ presence in the Australian Open will create history. She will be the oldest female competitor in the tournament’s main draw, breaking the previous record set by Kimiko Date of Japan, who competed in 2015 at the age of 44.

In a press release, Williams stated:

“I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer,”. “I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”

In 2025, Williams participated in three competitions, including the U.S. Open. At the D.C. Open in July of last year, she won her first singles match since August 2023. Before concluding her year in the U.S. Open, she made an appearance at the Cincinnati Open after that performance. Since Williams begins her season early in 2026, we may see more of her on the tennis court.
