After 17 seasons, Tony Dungy‘s tenure on “Football Night in America” seems to be coming to an end.
According to a report published by The Athletic on Wednesday, the head coach of the Pro Football Hall of Fame is expected to be involved in NBC’s plans to overhaul the program, which would result in his departure from the Sunday night football pregame show.
The network may yet change its mind, according to the article, which even raised the prospect of Dungy being placed in a “emeritus” role. However, a definitive decision regarding Dungy’s future has not yet been made.
In the past, broadcast icons Bob Costas and Al Michaels were assigned comparable responsibilities, and Dungy would be able to maintain ties to NBC while making a smaller contribution.
Other proposals for “Football Night in America” might include moving the program completely on the road with a smaller cast for the 2026 season.
Several NBC studio football analysts’ contracts ended after Super Bowl 2026, according to The Athletic. After Bill Belichick did not receive enough votes to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Dungy infuriated some football fans.
