Weeks after leaving the NHS mother and baby unit, Zara Ferns disregarded the drug-driving restriction and destroyed her SUV during a police chase on a cocaine binge.
Just weeks after being released from an NHS mother and baby ward, a new mother went on a cocaine binge, disobeying her drug-driving restriction and smashing her SUV during a police pursuit.
Zara Ferns, 26, had been allowed home from hospital with her newborn boy following a terrible bout of post natal issues – but later left the infant with his grandmother whilst she snorted the substance at a friend’s house.
After Ferns drove her Omoda 5 at twice the speed limit during a police chase, she was taken into custody early on January 25.
Ferns, a resident of Runcorn, Cheshire, repeatedly veered over the center white line before colliding with a concrete sign, according to testimony given in court.
Officers on the scene saw that she had white powder all over her nose, but Ferns did not provide a sample for analysis.
Later, when questioned, Ferns stated:
‘I have no idea why I took it. No idea why I got into the vehicle and no idea why I drove.’
After a 12-month disqualification for drug-driving in February of last year, investigations showed that she had been operating a vehicle while prohibited.
Ferns admitted to dangerous driving, driving while banned, failing to stop when asked by a policeman, failing to produce a specimen for analysis, and driving without insurance at Warrington Magistrates’ Court. She could spend up to two years in jail.
