Watch Marcus Smart Collide With ESPN Crew And Injures Bill Maher During Knicks-Lakers Game

If you ever wondered what it looks like when basketball chaos meets political commentary, the recent game between the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers delivered exactly that. Enter Marcus Smart and Bill Maher.

And of course, the star of the unexpected moment was none other than NBA player Marcus Smart, because if there’s one thing Smart is known for, it’s diving for loose balls like his life depends on it.

Unfortunately, this time the loose ball came with collateral damage.

During an intense sequence near the sidelines, Smart reportedly went flying out of bounds, and not the gentle kind of flying. We’re talking full speed, zero brakes, “someone please move that table” kind of flying.

Waiting in that exact spot were members of the ESPN broadcast crew and political commentator Bill Maher, who was sitting courtside trying to enjoy a peaceful night of basketball.

Spoiler alert: peace did not survive.

Smart crashed straight into the courtside area, sending equipment, chairs, and possibly someone’s expensive drink into complete chaos. Somewhere in the middle of the collision was Maher, who reportedly ended up injured during the unexpected basketball-meets-politics moment.

Both Smart and Maher appeared to escape the collision with minor injuries.

Maher showed off his seemingly injured finger to the ESPN broadcast, while Smart was seen favoring his left hand for multiple plays afterward.

At one point, Smart missed an open corner 3-point shot and favored his left hand after.

He did the same when checking out of the game moments later, but Smart did re-enter and eventually finished the contest, avoiding any serious injury.

Maher doesn’t appear to have suffered anything major either.

The Lakers subsequently won the contest, beating a surging Knicks squad 110-97 in one of their all-around best efforts of the season.

The good news is that the situation didn’t turn into anything truly serious, but it did remind everyone that sitting courtside is not just luxury seating. Sometimes it’s an extreme sport.

Meanwhile, Marcus Smart probably just shook it off and went back to playing defense like nothing happened, because in the NBA, diving into the crowd is just another skill.
