Meet Keyonna Waddell, 35, who has now officially secured a spot in the “this escalated way too fast” hall of fame. According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, she was found guilty over a March 2024 incident that turned a regular couple’s argument into, well, a full-blown explosion.
Here’s how things went left. The couple argued. Nothing new there. People argue every day. Most people yell, maybe slam a door, maybe send a dramatic text. You know, normal chaos, but not this time.
Authorities say Waddell had been threatening to use dynamite for months. Let that sink in. And somehow, the boyfriend still thought, “Yes, she’s probably joking.” Sir, respectfully, that was your first mistake.
After their argument on March 22, both of them left the apartment like adults who needed space. So far, so reasonable. But then the boyfriend returned home, went to sleep, and probably thought the drama was over. It was not.
That’s when Waddell allegedly came back and threw an explosive device into his room. Yes, while he was sleeping.
The result? His hand was blown off. Just like that. Argument upgraded to disaster in seconds.
“Domestic violence can escalate to deadly levels, and this case is a sobering reminder of that reality,” DA Ray Tierney said on Friday after the guilty verdict.
The boyfriend woke up a little while later to a “hissing sound” and then saw a flame on the floor that he couldn’t put out as time ticked away, police said. He tried to pick it up and toss it outside — but the makeshift bomb exploded and blew apart most of his hand, police revealed.
He stumbled out to the driveway screaming for help and spotted Waddell fleeing the scene, the DA detailed.
He was then rushed by responding police to Nassau University Medical Center, where the remainder of his hand and part of his arm were amputated, officials said.
In the end, Waddell is now facing the consequences, and the victim is left dealing with something far more serious than a breakup story.
So yes, relationships can be complicated, but they should never be explosive. And if they are? It’s time to exit immediately. No debate needed.
