NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders has denied rumors that he was considering a head coaching position with the Dallas Cowboys last season.
In 2023, the 58-year-old assumed leadership of the Colorado Buffaloes. In 2025, Sanders guided the Buffaloes to a dismal 3-9 record.
He was frequently connected to Arlington’s then-open head coaching position prior to the season. During his remarkable NFL career, Sanders spent five seasons with the Cowboys and won a Super Bowl ring in 1995.
However, he has rejected the notion that, following Mike McCarthy’s resignation, he was interested in coaching the squad. He stated:
“[The Cowboy links] weren’t real at all,”
“I liked playing the pro game, but I wouldn’t enjoy coaching the pro game.
“It’s a different game.”
“I’m focused on winning and getting these kids through college so they have degrees, and they’re able to attain tremendous professions even after football is over”.
“But I have no thought process of the NFL whatsoever.”
Brian Schottenheimer was elevated from offensive coordinator to head coach by the Cowboys. Sanders, however, signed a five-year, $54 million contract deal that will keep him in Boulder through 2029. Since Sanders’ victory with the team back in 1995, Dallas has not advanced to the Super Bowl.
Jerry Jones, the owner, has promised to make changes to the roster this offseason. In his debut season, Schottenheimer led the team to a 7-9-1 record, missing the postseason for the second consecutive year.
On September 13, 2026, the Cowboys travel to New Jersey to play the New York Giants.
