James Dolan continues to revel in the success of his Knicks’ 2026 NBA title. The team’s 71-year-old owner is already setting boundaries for the upcoming season, despite all the positive emotions on the eve of the team’s victory parade in New York.
In an interview with WFAN’s The Carton Show on Wednesday, Dolan discussed his outlook for the upcoming season after winning a championship. A few important free agents will have options after helping the team win a title, but the majority of the roster will return.
Dolan stated that while he would love to simply bring everyone back, he will not go above a certain price threshold. He stated:
“There’s certain things in the NBA that you’d have to be suicidal to do. One of them is the second apron. Cannot go into the second apron. I’ll write as big of a check as possible, but I can’t write a check that goes into the second apron.”

The same sentiment is shared by many NBA owners. Teams that exceed the second apron, a spending limit above the luxury tax, face severe fines. Next season, that figure will be $222 million. Roster rigidity, draft selection downgrades, a ban on sign-and-trade agreements, and a limitation on salary allocation in trades are all consequences. Additionally, it makes it impossible for a team to use the mid-level exemption.
