Danny Glover describes his experience living with Alzheimer’s. “I’ve been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s,” the 79-year-old actor stated in a recent appearance with “The Today Show,” adding, “I can live with it, in a sense.” The actor’s family also opened up to People about how they’re navigating his care.

Mandisa, Glover’s 50-year-old daughter, first observed changes in 2022, the year her father won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Oscars. Glover, who was once renowned for recalling minute details from decades before, began to leave gaps in well-known stories, she told the site. “There would be bits of the story missing,” she shared.

Glover still has strong recollections of his mother, who died in a car accident the same day he found out he had been cast in “Places in the Heart.” Glover recalled his mother during the interview, saying, “She says, ‘Son, the people said you can act.'” My daughter, guy. We got into arguments like a lover and girlfriend. Glover’s daughter told People, “We argue a lot, I mean, I’m the representative of his mother,” suggesting that Glover has continued the history of argumentation with her. I’ve assumed that position. He needs to dispute with someone, and it must be me. However, it’s all love.

The toll has been emotional, Glover’s brother Marty, 67, who lives with him and assists with his care, told People.

Alzheimer’s affects nearly 7 million Americans over 65, with Black men affected at double the national incidence. Despite his diagnosis, Glover remains connected with his community, telling us he still wishes to keep “talking to young people and their responsibility.”
