The FIFA World Cup is supposed to be about football, drama, impossible goals, and fans arguing about referees for six straight months.
What it is not supposed to be about is racist behavior toward streamers sitting in the stands with cameras.
Yet here we are. According to reports, FIFA has opened an investigation into the actions of some Argentina supporters after streamer iShowSpeed was subjected to racist taunts during Argentina’s recent World Cup matches.
Apparently some people bought tickets to football games and decided to audition for the role of “worst fan of the tournament.”
The latest incident happened after Lionel Messi helped Argentina pull off a thrilling comeback win over Egypt.
Most fans celebrated the victory the normal way. You know, cheering, singing, hugging strangers, and pretending they never doubted Messi for even one second.
Others, unfortunately, chose a different activity.

Reports say one fan sitting above Speed’s broadcasting area made monkey gestures toward him while others shouted insults.
Shortly before the Argentina-Egypt game on Tuesday, FIFA announced it had opened an investigation. The incident after the latest match would seemingly be addressed as part of this investigation.
“FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms,” the organization said in a statement. “These actions have no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup, or anywhere in society.”
“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect,” FIFA added. “It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world, and anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”
As for the fans involved, they managed to accomplish something terrible.
They turned one of the biggest wins of the tournament into a conversation about their behavior instead of their team’s performance. That is quite the own goal.
