After years of trying to integrate Blade into the existing Marvel universe, Kevin Feige conceded failure. Feige appeared to have given up on bringing the “Daywalker” of a vampire into the main MCU, despite the fact that there had been anticipation that Blade would eventually make his way into the new “rebooted” Marvel universe that was meant to be constructed after the events of 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
“I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala,” Feige said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
After Avengers: Secret Wars concludes Phase Six in 2027, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige has announced that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will not undergo a complete reboot. However, he does have some suggestions for the future.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz of Happy, Sad, Confused, the baseball cap-wearing comic book movie maestro hinted at what Marvel’s future film aspirations are. Fans have been unsure about where movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will leave Earth’s greatest heroes at the time of their release, but Feige didn’t hold back when asked if next year’s team-up movie would offer a relaunch. He said:
“No, but I look to the comics, as I always do, in terms of our storytelling. In both the Secret Wars – but particularly the [Jonathan] Hickman Secret Wars from 10 years ago – there’s a nice roadmap to where we can go.”
A multiverse-ending tale involving heroes and villains from throughout the Marvel universe is told in Hickman’s Secret Wars, which was published in 2015 and 2016. After its adaptation of Secret Wars debuts in December of next year, it also seems to assist steer the ever-growing MCU.
Longtime fans of the MCU were unsure of what the event would bring to the live-action film universe; many have been considering a reboot. Feige has previously skirted the issue, stating in 2025 that although the next X-Men film will contribute to a “reset” of the MCU, it won’t be a reboot.
At the time, he told Variety:
“Reboot is a scary word,” “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines. … X-Men is where that will happen next.”
Just last month, Doomsday and Secret Wars co-director Joe Russo stated that this year’s Avengers movie would return the cinematic universe “back to phase zero.” This statement supported rumors of a possible MCU reset.
