Some family reunions end with awkward conversations. Others end with prison sentences. Jordan Aronson’s family story sadly falls into the second category.
The 24-year-old internet-famous nephew of South Florida philanthropist Scott Grebler is heading to prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter with a weapon in connection with his uncle’s death. According to reports, Aronson will spend the next decade behind bars after a tragic incident involving a Jeep, a palm tree, and a family relationship that went completely off the rails.
Yes, a palm tree became part of a courtroom story. Nature really did not ask for this kind of drama.
Authorities said Aronson rammed Grebler into a palm tree with his Jeep, leading to the millionaire philanthropist’s death.
The then-college sophomore had been staying with his uncle at his $3 million Tampa mansion on June 13, 2023, when he plowed his Jeep Wrangler into Grebler, a founding member of the local 13 Ugly Men nonprofit.
He was caught on surveillance footage backing out of the driveway and speeding forward, ‘ramming [Grebler’s] body into the palm tree,’ Assistant State Attorney Melissa Grajales said at the plea hearing last month, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Grebler, 59, was taken to hospital, where he underwent treatment for injuries sustained to his skull and brain and was placed on a ventilator, WTSP reported.
The millionaire bachelor was pronounced dead days later.
Grebler was not just a wealthy businessman sitting quietly behind a mansion gate. He was a respected South Florida figure known for giving back and supporting causes in his community. His death left friends and supporters stunned.
But Aronson, who has more than 52,000 followers on TikTok and 23,000 on Instagram, where he posts videos offering advice and workouts to baseball pitchers, initially pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree homicide.
He told officers that his uncle had Parkinson’s disease and suffered from delusions and hallucinations. Often, Aronson claimed, Grebler would forget where he put his money or possessions and would assume they were stolen.
That is what happened the morning of the crash, Aronson asserted, as his lawyer claimed he ‘managed to keep his cool until he snapped.’
He claimed his uncle accused him of stealing money and became violent, allegedly stalking Aronson for hours and throwing rocks at the Jeep’s windshield even though no such theft had occurred.
Grebler was even caught on surveillance footage throwing a ceramic mug on the driveway, then placing the shattered pieces under the Jeep’s tires, according to court documents obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.
He then took his nephew’s bag out of the vehicle and followed Aronson ‘in an apparent attempt to engage in a physical altercation,’ the court documents allege.
After Aronson then got in the Jeep and backed out of the driveway, Grebler was seen on surveillance footage running toward the vehicle and throwing a three-ring binder at it in the moments before Aronson pulled forward.
The Jeep then briefly idled at the scene before it reversed down the road, a witness later told cops.
After he then left the scene moments later, Aronson called police, saying his uncle ‘tried to f***ing attack me when I was getting out of my car and I hit him with my car.’
The guilty plea brought an end to a case filled with heartbreak and difficult questions. Aronson avoided a longer legal battle by accepting responsibility for the charge, but the consequences remain massive. Ten years behind bars is a long time to think about one terrible moment.
