Lil Wayne has spent years making hits. Now, his son is making kicks.
Dwayne Carter III recently made his debut for Gainesville, and he wasted little time putting points on the board. The young kicker knocked through two field goals in the first half. Not a bad way to introduce yourself.
His first kick came from 35 yards out in the first quarter, then he followed it up with a 26-yarder in the next period.
Two kicks, two makes and zero drama.
Well, maybe a little drama. His last name is Carter, after all. And if that name sounds familiar, there is a very good reason.
Carter is also attracting attention from college football programs. Colorado is among the schools that has extended an offer to the talented kicker. Apparently, the Buffaloes are not just interested in quarterbacks and flashy headlines. They want kickers too.
Carter III is a senior for Gainesville. He transferred in from North Atlanta and has also played soccer. At the end of June, he announced his first Division I football scholarship offer from Deion Sanders and Colorado.
Following the defeat to Buford, Gainesville now checks in as the No. 12 team in Georgia, according to the Rivals Composite Rankings. The Red Elephants will now prepare for another big early-season test as they head up to Illinois to take on East St. Louis, the No. 1 team in the state, on Sept. 5.
Gainesville’s home-opener will come the following week against McEachern, another top-15 team in Georgia, on Sept. 11. There’s no shortage of notable games on the schedule for a roster that features double-digit ranked prospects. Carter will aim to do his part on special teams as his team looks to get in the win column next month.
Two field goals in his debut is a pretty good opening statement. Now, with Colorado showing interest, more college programs could start paying attention.
