A bottle service worker has the internet arguing over a question nobody expected to be debating this week: Can you get fired for making more money than your boss?
Apparently, the answer may depend on how you are making that money.
The woman went viral after claiming she lost her job when her boss discovered she was earning extra cash from customers while working. According to her story, customers regularly asked her for photos and videos.
Instead of simply ignoring the requests, she decided to monetize them. Business opportunity spotted.
She reportedly began sending interested customers links to her personal paid content, and judging by her story, the side hustle was doing pretty well.
Maybe a little too well. She claims her boss eventually found out and fired her.
That is where the internet split into two very loud camps.
One side says the customers were approaching her personally. They argue that if she was off the clock or selling personal content outside the company’s business, she should be allowed to make her own money.
The other side has a different view.
They say she was using her position at work to attract customers and make money outside the business. From that perspective, the issue is not how much money she made, it is whether she was breaking workplace rules.
And that is the part people sometimes forget.
Having customers ask for something does not automatically mean an employer has to approve it.
Imagine your boss discovering that you have built a side business using people you met through your job.
The boss might not exactly respond with balloons and a cake.
Then again, the worker’s supporters have a point too. If customers were already seeking her out independently and she was simply responding through her own channels, some people see no problem.
So, was she wrongfully fired?
That depends on the workplace policies, employment agreement and exactly how the side business operated. Without knowing those details, the internet cannot really hand down a final verdict.
Either way, she has managed to turn a firing into free publicity.
And considering how much attention the story is getting, her next job interview might be very interesting.
