Michael Jordan has added another title to his long list.
Basketball legend, Businessman, Sneaker icon, and now, apparently, part of the journalism and content-creation business.
Morehouse College has opened a new multimedia center with help from Jordan. The college celebrated the grand opening of the Morehouse Multimedia Center on Wednesday with a program launch and ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Yes, there was a ribbon, and considering this is Michael Jordan, you already know people were paying attention.
The new center is designed to help prepare the next generation of journalists, storytellers and content creators. Students will have a space where they can develop their skills and learn how modern media works.
“The Morehouse Multimedia Center represents our vision for preparing students not only to participate in the future of media, but to lead it,” said Emani Saucier, the center’s inaugural director and co-founder.
The facility was made possible through support from Jordan Brand. In 2021, they committed more than $1 million to scholarships and academic programs for Morehouse students studying journalism and sports-related fields, the college said.
Jordan’s involvement gives the project an interesting twist. The six-time NBA champion built one of the most recognizable brands in sports history. His name has been attached to sneakers, clothing, restaurants and plenty of business ventures.
Now his influence is helping students explore the world of media. That is quite a career résumé.
Morehouse launched its journalism major in 2022. Mikki Harris, chair of the Journalism in Sports, Culture and Social Justice department, said the new center will provide practical training to complement students’ classroom education.
“The center serves as the bridge between critical thinking and professional practice for our students,” Harris said.
The facility will also give faculty members tools to digitize their research and share it with wider audiences.
Morehouse said nearly 120 journalism program alumni currently work in media and sports, while more than 60 graduates have earned advanced degrees in the field.
The grand opening marks the beginning of what could become an important resource for the college. With Morehouse providing the academic environment and Jordan bringing his support and experience, students now have another tool to chase their goals.
