Brianna Berry is used to dealing with legal trouble from the other side of the courtroom. Now, the Harris County public defender is facing some of her own.
Berry was arrested Friday after allegedly attacking her ex-boyfriend at the home where he was staying. According to court documents, she was charged with burglary of a habitation and aggravated assault against a family member.
And yes, the allegations involve a hammer and a bite. Apparently, this relationship breakup needed an action-movie subplot.
Authorities allege Berry entered the residence and confronted her former boyfriend. The situation became physical, with Berry accused of hitting him with a hammer and biting him.
Breakups are rarely fun, but most people settle for blocking numbers, returning hoodies and posting vague quotes on social media.
Records state Berry was employed full-time at the Harris County Public Defender’s Office. She had not been employed a full month.
Berry is accused of breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s aunt’s home. She allegedly attacked the ex with a hammer and bit him.
Her bond is set at $4,000 for both charges.
Berry’s professional background makes the case especially striking. As a public defender, she works in the legal system and helps represent people accused of crimes. Now, she has found herself on the other side of a criminal case.
That is one way to get familiar with the system.
There is also a lesson here for everyone going through a breakup: maybe leave the hammer at home.
Actually, leave the hammer completely out of the breakup.

Just don’t turn the breakup into a wrestling match involving construction equipment and teeth.
