Malik Beasley Agrees To Plead Guilty To His NBA Gambling Scheme And Charges

Malik Beasley is facing a major turning point in his legal battle, and this time, there is no basketball court where he can shoot his way out of trouble.

The veteran NBA guard, who was indicted earlier this year over federal gambling allegations, is reportedly preparing to change his not-guilty plea and plead guilty.

Yes, the same Malik Beasley who spent years trying to put points on the scoreboard is now dealing with a legal situation that could have serious consequences for his future.

Apparently, life off the court can get much harder than defending against an NBA superstar.

The formal charges were filed in June. Beasley was accused of participating in a scheme based on manipulation of prop bets based on his statistics.

Beasley is scheduled to officially plead guilty on December 9.

The nine-year veteran allegedly manipulated his play in four games with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2023-24 season. He allegedly agreed to do so as a way to pay off a loan after falling into debt.

Of course, changing a plea is not like changing teams during free agency. There are legal consequences, and the process can have a lasting impact on a person’s career and reputation.

Suddenly, the most important numbers are no longer points per game or shooting percentages. They are the details in the court documents.

The nine-year veteran allegedly manipulated his play in four games with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2023-24 season. He allegedly agreed to do so as a way to pay off a loan after falling into debt.

He earned roughly $60 million. Per Vorkunov, Beasley nearly signed a new $42 million deal after finishing second in the Sixth Man of the Year voting for the 2024-25 season. The offer was withdrawn after the gambling situation came to light.

The Beasley situation is just one of several NBA gambling scandals since sports betting became legalized on a widespread basis. The NFL has avoided, to date, a major gambling scandal since the Supreme Court opened the floodgates in 2018 to state-by-state wagering on sports.

A guilty plea can carry penalties that extend beyond financial costs. Depending on the circumstances, it may also affect future employment opportunities and his standing within the basketball community.

Beasley made his name by putting the ball through the hoop. Now, his future depends on navigating a legal battle where there are no easy shots and absolutely no guaranteed wins.
