A Texas teacher is facing serious questions after admitting to having sexual relationships with two teenage boys. Yet the punishment she received has left many people wondering if the justice system accidentally hit the snooze button.
Shelby Dawn Lashombe, a high school teacher in Texas, admitted to having sex with two teenage students. That alone sounds like the kind of story that should come with a very long list of consequences.
Instead, Lashombe received what critics have described as a “soft punishment.”
And yes, that phrase is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Shelby Dawn Lashombe, 25, of Waco, who was facing decades behind bars, received a sweetheart deal of deferred probation for six years and a $1,000 fine as part of a plea deal with prosecutors last week, KWTX reported.
The judge additionally ordered Lashombe to spend just four weekends in jail and another 60 days working on the county chain gang.
In cases ending with deferred probation, there is no final judgement of guilt and Lashombe will avoid felony conviction if she complies with the conditions of probation.
Judge Thomas West told Lashombe in court Friday that he would have given her a more severe sentence if one of the boys’ fathers had not testified that his son is doing well after the twisted tryst.
The boy’s father said his son is going to counseling but was not traumatized by what happened.
The details of Lashombe’s case have fueled frustration over whether teachers receive the same level of scrutiny as other adults accused of similar conduct.
And social media, being social media, has already turned the story into another giant debate.
Some people are focused on the teacher’s actions, others are questioning the father’s decision to support her.
One thing is clear: this is not the sort of teacher-student relationship anyone should be treating like a teenage romance movie.
Teachers have classrooms, students have homework, and nobody needs to mix those two things together and call it a love story.
