One of the biggest stories in the current head coaching carousel around the NBA could be coming to a close as soon as today. According to Yahoo! Sports, Steve Kerr is expected to make his decision between the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors today after one final push from Warrior officials last night.
After the Golden State Warriors made an aggressive final bid to usurp the New York Knicks in pursuit of Steve Kerr, the NBA’s hottest coaching candidate is finally closing in on a decision on Wednesday, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The inability of Knicks owner James Dolan and president Phil Jackson to close a deal with Kerr in the past several days has left the Warriors with an opportunity to persuade Kerr to bypass the Knicks’ rebuilding project for a Western Conference contender.
New York had been pursuing a shorter length deal than has been available to Kerr elsewhere, league sources said, and that’s believed to have re-opened Kerr’s mind to the possibility of the Warriors’ job again.
A deal between Kerr and the Knicks has seemed like a foregone conclusion since late April, but New York has been unable to close the deal. While the Knicks may not want to commit to the rookie head coach for more than a few years, you can’t fault Kerr for wanting a longer deal. With the way that teams are firing coaches in today’s league, job security is at a premium.
It will be interesting to see what Kerr decides. The Warriors are obviously the better win-now prospect, with a roster built to contend out West immediately. But the appeal of Phil Jackson and New York City could be enough to send Kerr to the Big Apple. Either way, we should have our answer sooner rather than later.
