Tony Dungy has joined the ever growing list of people in NFL circles who want no part of reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston at this point and time.
During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, the Super Bowl winning coach and current NBC analyst was asked whether he’d use a first-round pick on Winston:
As of now, I wouldn’t. I’d have to do a lot of research and go in and talk to him. But you don’t want the face of your franchise and the guy you’re going to take in the top-five picks to have all those off-field issues. You just don’t.
Dungy isn’t sure he’d use a late round pick on Winston either, making the point that the quarterback will still be the face of a franchise no matter where he gets selected.
His opinion on Winston is less controversial than when Dungy said he wouldn’t draft Michael Sam because of the distraction he might cause.
Winston, unfortunately, is a walking distraction at this point in his life.
