Snoop Dogg has a problem with the NBA and NFL, claiming that both leagues racially profile their black players by keeping marijuana on the banned drug list — knowing their white counterparts don’t partake as much.
While appearing on ESPN’s First Take — Snoop claimed that both Roger Goodell and Adam Silver are looking to single out black players — using MLB and the NHL for reference points in pointing out how they are less stringent with their testing.
“My position is, NHL, they don’t test for marijuana. Major League Baseball, they don’t test for marijuana. Basketball and NFL, they test for marijuana,” Snoop said. “The sports that are basically dominated that people that look like me and people that do what I do. So it seems like there’s racial profiling going on, because like [host Max Kellerman] said, it seems like they’re in bed with the alcohol companies and whatnot.”
“So now you’re taking something that’s prescribed by a doctor, maybe it’s just a rubbing cream, maybe it’s an edible. It doesn’t always have to be smoking. There’s different ways of being treated through this medical cannabis,” he added. Medical marijuana and recreational marijuana are legal in so many states now, so it does seem a little hypocritical that the NFL and NBA have such harsh restrictions against it still. NFL players are fined and suspended for at least four games if they test positive for weed. That’s a quarter of their season!
While he makes valid points, I believe the NBA is less stringent, and could soon move towards removing marijuana from their drug policy. NBA players are tested at several points per season:
All players are subject to four (4) random tests each season (from October 1 to June 30). All players are also subject to two (2) random tests each off-season (from July 1 to September 30). All such tests are scheduled and conducted by an independent, third-party entity and are without prior notice to the player. The NBA and the NBPA are not involved in the scheduling of any tests or the selection of players for testing.
