A young black man, Devonte Shipman, was stopped by a white police officer in Florida and cited for jaywalking. According to the Miami Herald, the encounter was being recorded on Shipman’s cell phone. During the encounter while explaining why he stopped Shipman and a friend, officer J.S. Bolen asked for id. When Shipman said he didn’t have id, Bolen said it is state law and he could be detained for up to 7 hours until he is identified. Sounds reasonable right?
Only problem is, no such law exists. Motorists are required to have a license on their person at all times but there is no such statute for pedestrians.
Take a look at the video below and judge the motive of the officer for yourself.
