Biracial college student Kiara Lawhon who was born to a white mother and an African American/Puerto Rican father never had any interest in politics. It wasn’t until the unjustified unarmed killing of black and brown men by American police over the last few years that Lawhon started to notice there was truly something wrong.
Fast forward to Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, NFL players decided to take a knee during the national anthem in protest to police brutality, racism and President Donald Trump’s “Son of a B****” comments. Lawhon reacted by posting on her Facebook page “Loving the NFL today! #TakeTheKnee”. Many people liked her status, as they could relate to what Kaepernick, NFL players and other citizens are protesting about, but Lawhon’s mother wasn’t happy about her point of view.
