In case you haven’t heard: the Red Sox fan who caught A-Rods home run ball that tied for 4th all time decided he won’t give the ball back to the Yankees.
The Red Sox went as far as to offer him a meet and greet with David Ortiz, his favorite player, in return for the invaluable baseball. There were a couple glaring problems with their attempted negotiations, though.
Firstly, Red Sox fans are notoriously stubborn and outspoken in their love for the team (trust me). This fan held up such a standard by denying any attempt to re-attain the ball by the MLB immediately. He didn’t have to think about it for a second; and that’s a true Sox fan.
Secondly, the Red Sox hadn’t even asked David Ortiz if he’d agree to the meet and greet. Big Papi always demands his worth without leaving a penny on the table, so you know any FREE work hes doing he will decide for himself, personally.
“That is not OK with me at all,” Ortiz told the New York Daily News. “That’s not the way it’s supposed to work. They’re supposed to ask me before any of my (items) get offered to anyone.”
Ortiz made it clear, that it wasn’t because he didn’t want his items being associated with Rodriguez, but rather the team violating normal protocol.
“It’s not because they were doing this for A-Rod’s ball,” Ortiz said. “It’s because they’re supposed to ask for my (things) before they do something like that.
“And if Alex really wanted the ball and they did this thing right, of course I’d sign some (items).”
Now think about it: would you want your work adding to your load without pay and without discussing it with you first?
It’s a good thing the fan remained stubborn and continued to deny any and all efforts from the MLB.
Otherwise, Ortiz would likely be dealing with a bigger and badder PR story. “Big Papi Denies Fans Meet & Greet” doesn’t sound very good to an extremely image-conscious organization such as the Boston Red Sox.
