Anthony Joshua the current undefeated heavyweight champion owns three belts, the International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation. He successfully defended his title over the weekend with seventh round TKO over Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium.
As per Boxing Scene Joshua is already booked at Wembley Stadium for April 13 but an opponent hasn’t been named. Naturally most people want to see a fight with also undefeated heavyweight Deontay Wilder who owns the World Boxing Council belt. Joshua is reported saying
“We have to fight, it would be silly not to” after inflicting the first stoppage-loss of Povetkin’s professional career.
Wilder has a fight with Tyson Fury in December who was the former heavyweight champion in England. Promoter Eddie Hearn is being reported as saying
“We’re not willing to wait until December to see. A deal must be done in advance of that, subject to him winning.
“But now, after 80,000 (the estimated crowd at Wembley) and the worldwide exposure and after the finish (against Povetkin) that offer (made previously, by the Wilder camp) will look like absolute peanuts when this fight is made.”
Looks like Hearn and Joshua’s camp would like to secure the fight in the event Fury defeats Wilder, which would most likely result in a rematch being scheduled. We’ll see soon enough if both sides can negotiate a fight sooner rather than later.
