The Suns haven’t been good for a very long time, so you think the owner would chill on the threats considering he is one of the reasons they are terrible.
He wants the taxpayers to pay for renovations to the arena and they aren’t having it.
The city council was scheduled to vote Wednesday afternoon on whether to spend $230 million on upgrades to Talking Stick Resort Arena. Mayor Thelda Williams and two council members asked for a postponement, apparently because of strong public backlash to the proposal.
There is little public appetite these days for spending tax money on sports venues, but the backlash the council is feeling is more about Sarver and his stewardship of the Suns, if you can call it that.
According to Arizona Republic columnist Laurie Roberts, Robert Sarver has dropped hints to council members that he could move the Suns to Las Vegas or Seattle should the arena deal fall through.
It is just likely a hollow threat because of all the things you need to do move a franchise, but the situation is worth monitoring.
