Seeing talent waste their life can be heartbreaking for everyone involved, its even tougher for people who believe in you and you still won’t rise to the occasion.
Cleveland Browns Josh Gordon is one of those people. Josh Gordon has been in trouble dating back to college but since being in the NFL, he hasn’t seemed to change or even want to. Hall of Famer Cris Carter, expressed his disappointment with Gordon, even going as far to say that he doesn’t even know if Gordon wants to be saved.
“It’s fairly obvious that (using substances) is more important to him than anything else,” the former Ohio State star told cleveland.com in a phone interview. “It’s always been very, very important to him. It’s well-documented that it’s been primary since early college. Maybe it even goes back to early high school.”
“If the building is on fire and the person decides to stay in there, I don’t run in there and get him out,” Carter said. “If you see them breaking the glass, if you see them struggling and trying to get out — that’s my analogy of how I help out the guys in the league and the kids that really, really need help.”
“I’d much rather help an undrafted free agent that has a problem and he says I’ve got a problem and he wants some help, then help a guy who’s first-team All-Pro (and hasn’t reached out),” said Carter.
“Josh can’t even help himself,” said Carter. “How can he help the fans?”
Cris Cater makes huge points especially after overcoming substance abuse himself after being cut from the Eagles in 1990. Gordon is now facing an indefinite suspension from the NFL after being in trouble for what seems to be his third strike. Cris Carter might be right, Josh Gordon maybe one of those individuals who can’t be helped. Those who want to be helped reach out and with all the help the NFL is providing Gordon with, he’s yet to take that step and admit something is wrong and needs to be changed. Hopefully, he will realize it soon before his life makes the wrong turn into something he regrets.
“Josh is not my responsibility. Not everyone is in a position to be saved.”
