As we covered a couple weeks ago, Oregon wide receiver Darren Carrington Jr. missed what could be the most important game in his career when he tested positive for marijuana the week leading up to the National Championship game.
Well, according to CBS Sports, Darren’s father and former NFL defensive back Darren Carrington Sr. told CSN that his son was only in the room with others who were smoking, which lead to secondhand smoke that ended in the failed drug test.

Carrington Sr., a former NFL defensive back, said today during a phone interview that his son did not actually smoke marijuana. He merely was in a room with others who were, leading to him inhaling secondhand smoke and thus testing positive for having marijuana in his blood stream. Now he faces the prospects of missing several games next season, something his father hopes can be avoided.
“It’s unfortunate that it was such a high price to pay for something like that,” Carrington Sr. said.
Now no parent wants to believe their child would have such poor decision making skills before one of the biggest days of his life but it’s hard to say whether I believe this story or not. I don’t know if his father is somewhat naive or if he is just fighting for his son so that he won’t miss additional games at the beginning of the season. Either way, Carrington Sr. is sticking to this story saying that his son test positive for “15 nanogram of THC per milliliter of blood” and that these levels could potentially be a result of secondhand smoke.
Just playing devil’s advocate here but if I have a national championship game and I’m NOT going to smoke, then I’m definitely not going to be in the vicinity of marijuana just to take precautionary steps.
Oregon got waxed but it’s hard to say what would of happened if Darren Carrington would have played. But I guess we’ll never really know the entire truth….the only person who knows is Darren.
