NFL wide receiver Wes Welker is starting to think about his career mortality lately, and is apparently considering retirement as Fox Sports 1’s Mike Garafolo reported. Welker has suffered through a string of consecutive season with multiple concussions and the war and tear is probably taking its toll on the 33 year-old. Welker will be going into his 12th season next year, and for a WR of diminutive stature, one can not blame him for looking out for the welfare of his future.
Garafolo reported that Welker has yet to make a final decision, but has told concerned friends and family members he is giving serious thought to ending his career.
Welker is slated to become a free agent next month. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday’s edition of NFL Total Access that Welker is not expected to be back with Denver.
Welker is coming off of one of his worst seasons as a pro, putting up just 49 catches for 464 yards and 2 TD’s. With his skills clearly eroding, and reports surfacing that he will not even be back in Denver, Welker’s retirement may be more than just about concussions. There may not be much out there for Welker on the free-agent market either. At his age, declining physical tools, and presumably high price tag: teams may be weary of bringing him in. Welker’s best bet would be to try to latch on to a contender as a break-in-emergency-only specialty player alas, Brandon Stokley.
