Stuart Scott was a house hold name for many sports fans. Scott was a very well known sports anchor who joined the ESPN team in 1993. Scott’s unique ability to blend hip hop and sports put him in a league of his own. Scott showed a positive attitude about life even though he faced and had many obstacles to overcome.
In 2002, Scott was hit in the face by a football while filming a special for ESPN at New York Jets mini-camp. The blow caused damage to his cornea which would later required surgery. After receiving surgery, he suffered from ptosis, or drooping of the eyelid. This was only a minor issue in comparison to what Scott had to face during the later years if his life.
One Sunday morning in 2007, Scott was suffering from a stomach ache. He was scheduled to work a Monday Night Football game in Pittsburg but decided to go to hospital after stomach pains got worst. After arriving at the hospital it was determined that Scott needed his appendix removed. After having his appendix removed it was later test and doctors learned that he had cancer. Scott showed his drive and dedication by continuing to work for ESPN while receiving treatment and undergoing chemotherapy to help control his cancer.
Scott’s cancer went into remission but returned in 2013. He was in a fight for his life every day. Scott wanted to stay busy and in be in the best shape possible while fighting cancer. He would take mixed martial arts classes right after receiving chemo. By 2014, he had undergone 58 infusions of chemotherapy and switched to chemotherapy pills. Scott went under radiation and had multiple surgeries but never wanted anyone to know what stage of cancer he was in.
Scott’s memoir, “Every Day I Fight” was completed shortly before his death revealing some of the private details of his life’s final battle and will serve as a inspiration to millions. The memoir is set to be released on March 10.
Scott died on January 4, 2015 but his memories will forever live on.
