It’s official, at least for now.
Tom Brady’s suspension of 4 games has been upheld, to little surprise, and all eyes are now squarely focused on the courtroom drama that’s about to unfold.
While DeflateGate and it’s subsequent punishment have been talked about non-stop for the better part of a year, one man has been able to slip under the radar; when really he’s the man we should be focusing on.
The Patriots 2014 2nd round pick, backup QB, Jimmy Garoppolo.
When NFL training camps officially open this week, Jimmy is going to receive more pressure than he has ever dreamed of. The Patriots may have quietly signed the infamous Matt Flynn during the offseason, but rest assured, New England expects Jimmy G to be their backup.
As for how he’s developed coming into his second year as a pro, one Patriots source with knowledge of the situation says that Garoppolo appear’s to be much more confident.
“Early on, it was a difficult transition for (Garoppolo) just to call plays in the huddle and go through the reads and progressions,” the source told Jeff Darlington. “He made strides over the course of the preseason, but (the Patriots were) still a bit hesitant to think he was ready if he was needed last year.
“This offseason, he continued to make strides and was much more confident in calling plays and running the offense. He will still need to adjust to NFL defense now that he’s had a year to get down the offense.”
So at least Patriot fans have that bit of good news to takeaway from today?
You can’t expect a season as great as Tom Brady’s when he stepped in for Drew Bledsoe all those years ago. All you can hope for is that you’ll have yourselves a viable backup QB that gives your team the opportunity to win games.
Jimmy G may be that answer.
