Back in 2010 the Yankees were fresh off a World Series win. It is a tad strange to hear this in 2015.
Everyone knows that the captain, Derek Jeter, wasn’t going to get replaced at short shop. Sure his career had been on a decline but if the Yankees would’ve wanted to get Troy Tulowitzki, they would’ve gotten him and then he would have made his adjustments there. Contract negotiations were the topic but Brian Cashman had other ideas when it came to Jeter’s salary.
Cashman’s answer: Troy Tulowitzki, among others.
“Do you really want me to answer that?” Cashman told Jeter, according to a source who spoke to SI. “We’re not paying extra money for popularity. We’re paying for performance.”
Cashman did say that he didn’t give Sports Illustrated any quotes because this was a private meeting. This has turned into a he said, she said story.
