Project Dream started out as just that, a dream but it may soon come into our reality. Some fans are going to push this Dreamcast 2 idea to SEGA in hopes of bringing a new system to all of us. For those who may be too young to know this, SEGA was once a giant in the console gaming industry pre-Sony Playstation. The SEGA Dreamcast was their last console released in 1999 as an answer to the original Sony Playstation, and the console had a successful launch but the system lacked third party support and was destroyed once the Playstation 2 released in 2000. The Dreamcast was a great console which deserved better but SEGA has stayed out of the market since, focusing on game developing.
Now the details are technical and with one million backers, this really might happen.
Via Dreamcast 2 Project,
All SEGA consoles were/are based off Arcade hardware and all except Dreamcast were sold at profit including Sega Saturn. The reason why DC was sold at a loss was because it was priced $50 too cheap. Its original price was supposed to be $250(because its BOM price was $175) and SEGA did not have enough supply for its NAOMI Arcade counterpart for mass production due to the fact that its SH-4 Katana motherboard was mainly used in Hybrid Cars.
SEGA can also do what not even PlayStation can: They have the technology to sell developers SDKs at cheaper prices and can cut budget and development costs on console games.
More competition is always a good thing for consumers. Means better prices and more deals. I am all for a Dreamcast 2 and if what they say is correct, that means SEGA can really give Playstation and Microsoft a run for their money. Still some hurdles before this is really a go so let’s cross our fingers.
