GGG is one of the most exciting fighters in boxing but unfortunately he can’t ink the top notch fighters necessary to push him to the next level.
Both GGG and Canelo have to win their spring fights to keep their matchup alive and even then it’s possible that terms aren’t agreed to in time to secure a Fall fight. If Canelo was to move in a different direction GGG thins he has another option for a PPV fight.
“Look, Bernard’s the biggest name (Sergey) Kovalev fought so it would be a great opponent for Gennady,” Tom Loeffler (GGG’s promoter) told Steve Kim.
“If (Billy Joe) Saunders isn’t going to fight, if ‘Canelo’s (Saul Alvarez) is not going to fight, we would consider a marketable name at 168 and Hopkins is more active than (Andre) Ward is, so it makes sense.”
Hopkins may not have the skills to defeat GGG but we saw him prove in the Kovalev fight that his toughness and heart can carry him further than talent.
