As we all know, the narrative surrounding Terrell Owens as someone teams couldn’t wait to get rid of is false. Hall of Fame voter and player James Lofton spoke about this on his weekly SiriusXM NFL Radio appearance, and was picked up by Pro Football Talk. Lofton immediately debunked the narrative sating:
Teams couldn’t wait to get rid of him. He played for the 49ers for eight years. So was it in year one when they couldn’t wait to get rid of him? Was it in year four? Was it in year six? Was it when they signed a six-year, $40 million contract with him? There’s no reality there. Maybe the last couple of weeks or the last half of the last season, maybe. But he was a pretty good teammate. They like the way he played.
That’s the thing about this narrative. It’s not like you can’t check how long Owens has played on teams. Was Owens outspoken and controversial at times, no doubt. But his numbers speak for themselves and this idea that team’s couldn’t wait to get rid of him just doesn’t hold water.
