An Omaha man is facing multiple charges after he accidentally shot himself while he slept with his new handgun.
Omaha.com reports that the unidentified man was sitting on his couch when he fell asleep with the 9 mm pistol in his hand. He was awakened after discovering he shot himself in the hand when the gun went off in the middle of the night.
The man, who lives near 60th and L Streets, told police he was sitting on a couch in his house when he “must have fallen asleep” holding his newly purchased 9 mm pistol in his right hand. His wife and kids were asleep in their bedrooms at the time, according to a police report.
He told officers he was awakened about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday by a loud bang. He soon realized he had shot his left pinky finger.
The man’s wife drove him to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy for treatment. Doctors told the police officers who came to the hospital around 5:30 a.m. that the wound would require surgery.
