Outspoken cornerback Richard Sherman recently was cut by the Seattle Seahawks. Not long after being cut Sherman negotiated a deal on his behalf without an agent with the San Francisco 49ers. Sherman new contract is reported to be for 3 years/$39 million, with little guaranteed money. The deal reportedly has Sherman making majority of his money based on whether he makes the Pro Bowl and/or All Pro teams, per CBS Sports.
If Sherman gets voted to the Pro Bowl in 2018, he’ll get an extra $1 million. If he’s named an All-Pro, which is slightly more difficult then getting voted to the Pro Bowl, then Sherman will earn another $2 million. Also, if Sherman is voted to the Pro Bowl in 2018, a total of $16 million in base salary for 2019 and 2020 seasons will become fully guaranteed. Sherman would get $8 million in base salary for each season, with one catch: The money doesn’t become fully guaranteed until the third day of the league year in March 2019.
Some would say that Sherman current contract leaves him vulnerable to being cut in any of the 3 years of the deal if he doesn’t perform at a Pro Bowl or All Pro level (especially coming off a year that was cut short to an Achilles injury). Some would like to think that Sherman is betting on himself. Joe Thomas is part of the group of people who believes Sherman negotiated a bad contract.
