Alcorn State University is honoring one of it’s greats this Saturday during halftime of the Lady Braves game against bitter rival Jackson State University.
At halftime Alcorn will honor former Women’s Head Basketball Coach Shirley A. Gibbs-Walker by naming the basketball court of the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex in her honor.
Walker, whom coached thirty years at Alcorn State, piled up nearly 500 wins coming just short with 493 total victories, which holds the all-time mark at the university.
Alcorn’s Lady Braves brought home 12 regular season conference titles, as well as 6 conference tournament titles as members of the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference). Under Walker the Lady Braves also made 3 NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2005.
Walker has previously been inducted into the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame, and also received recognition being awarded the SWAC Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
