Both are Irish and both are champions in their respective disciplines but other than that, they have nothing in common. Or so says decorated boxing champion Carl Frampton.
Frampton, who defends the world featherweight title against former champion Leo Santa Cruz on Saturday at the MGM Las Vegas, told BoxingScene.com that he’s happy with the fan base he has but looks forward to meeting The Notorious MMA in person one day.
“For combat sports probably (we are the top two) but I think McGregor stands alone. He is a huge name all over the world. He is a massive star who I admire a lot but I am pretty happy with what I am doing and the fan base I got.”
“We are completely different characters but McGregor is doing his thing and fair play to him. He seems to be great with it. And why not? I haven’t met him yet. He has sent me a couple messages before fights to wish me luck. I am still looking to meet him.”
The intense public scrutiny isn’t for everyone. Frampton is enjoying his championship reign in relative obscurity outside of Ireland while McGregor has the media glare of every move he makes.
