Detroit Pistons Makes Unwanted History: First NBA Team to Lose 27 Consecutive Games in a season

The Detroit Pistons faced a historic setback in the NBA, becoming the first team to endure a staggering 27 consecutive losses in a single season. This unfortunate record was sealed as they fell 118-112 to the Brooklyn Nets on a Tuesday night. Their struggle was evident when they led 9-1 and held a 14-point advantage in the first quarter, only to succumb to poor shooting, defensive lapses, and turnovers.

The Nets capitalised on the Pistons’ vulnerabilities, outscoring them by 13 in the second quarter to establish a 61-54 halftime lead. Despite a promising performance by Cade Cunningham, who scored 41 points with 18 in the third quarter, the Pistons couldn’t maintain momentum. Cunningham’s 3-pointer in the fourth briefly gave Detroit a 97-92 lead, but a 13-0 run by the Nets secured their victory.

Fan Outcry: Demands for Change as Pistons Owner Stays Absent

While Bojan Bogdanovic contributed 23 points before fouling out, defensive lapses allowed Brooklyn to exploit openings, notably leaving Cam Johnson wide open for a crucial 3-pointer. Jaden Ivey, the No. 5 pick from the previous year, struggled, missing 9 of 12 shots as the Nets strategically backed off, inviting him to shoot.

In the closing minutes, the frustration among fans reached a boiling point as chants of “Sell the team! Sell the team!” echoed through Little Caesars Arena. Notably absent during this outcry was Pistons owner Tom Gores, who was not in attendance to hear the discontent.

The Pistons now face the challenge of matching the all-time record of 28 consecutive losses, set by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. Their next test comes against the NBA-leading Boston Celtics, making the prospect of extending this unwanted streak seem likely. As the season unfolds, the Pistons find themselves in a challenging position, desperately seeking a turnaround to salvage their reputation in the league.
