New details released Saturday and Sunday about the death of former San Francisco 49ers All-Pro defensive end Aldon Smith reveal a day that began with an act of generosity and ended in unexplained tragedy.

Smith, 36, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose on June 13, 2026, after being found unresponsive in the passenger seat of a friend’s pickup truck. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the death and is investigating; the cause and manner of death remain pending. Toxicology results could take weeks or months.

According to Amir Shirazi, a longtime friend who spent Smith’s final hours with him, the pair started the day by delivering 10 Little Caesars pizzas to CHAM Deliverance Ministry, a San Jose charity that feeds the homeless. Smith, who had recently returned to the Bay Area and was facing financial difficulties, wore a throwback New York Knicks jersey and posed for photos during the surprise drop-off. The charity’s co-founder noted that Smith appeared tired or lethargic but participated willingly.

After the delivery, Shirazi and Smith stopped at a grocery store and gas station before heading to Shirazi’s home in Los Gatos. Shirazi went inside briefly to turn on lights. When he returned to his white Chevy pickup truck, he found Smith slumped over in the front passenger seat, mouth open, with his 6-foot-4 frame slightly twitching. Shirazi initially thought Smith might be asleep or suffering a seizure or heart attack.

“He was perfectly fine an hour before,” Shirazi told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I came out and he was basically dead in my front seat. I’m just in shock.”

Shirazi called 911 and enlisted help from former 49ers running back Anthony Dixon to perform CPR at the scene. Smith was declared dead at the hospital less than an hour later. Shirazi, who had not seen Smith use drugs that day and described only occasional marijuana use historically, said he believes the death was natural, possibly from a massive heart attack.

Smith had spoken with 49ers rookies at Levi’s Stadium the previous week and was looking forward to watching the NBA Finals that night.

The 49ers announced Smith’s death Saturday evening in a statement that called it a “sudden and tragic passing.”

“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the team said. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”

The Raiders and other organizations issued similar statements of shock and condolences. No official cause has been released by authorities or the teams. There are no public reports of foul play or external trauma. The Medical Examiner’s Office has stated only that the investigation is active and that further information is not yet available.
