Former NBA champion and coach Derek Fisher and “Basketball Wives” personality Gloria Govan have separated and been living separate lives, a representative for the couple confirmed Friday.
The pair, who married in July 2021, are not currently pursuing a divorce, according to the representative who spoke with TMZ. The two remain in constant communication and are working through personal issues while prioritizing the family they have built together.
Fisher, 51, and Govan, 41, began dating in 2015. Fisher proposed in April 2018 in a moment that included their children. They originally planned a 2020 wedding but postponed it because of the COVID-19 pandemic before exchanging vows in a ceremony at Cielo Farms in Malibu.
This is the second marriage for both. Govan was previously married to former NBA forward Matt Barnes, with whom she shares twin sons. Fisher was previously married to Candace Fisher and has four children from that relationship.
The couple’s relationship began amid highly publicized drama involving Barnes, a former Los Angeles Lakers teammate of Fisher’s. In October 2015, while Barnes and Govan were separated, reports emerged that Barnes drove roughly 95 miles from the Memphis Grizzlies’ training camp after learning Fisher was at the home Govan once shared with Barnes. A physical altercation followed. Police responded but no charges were filed. Barnes later said he went to check on his young sons rather than confront Fisher. The two men have since indicated the matter is behind them.
Fisher, a five-time NBA champion primarily known for his years with the Lakers, later coached the New York Knicks. Govan rose to wider fame through the reality series “Basketball Wives.” The pair have largely kept their personal lives private in recent years after the early turbulence surrounding their relationship.
As of the representative’s statement, no legal steps toward divorce have been taken. The focus, according to those close to them, remains on resolving their issues as a family.
